Before the First Freeze

Before the First Freeze: Your WNC Landscape Winter Prep Checklist

Fall is putting on a show across Western North Carolina, but those colorful leaves and crisp October mornings also mean one thing: winter isn’t far behind.

Mid-October is the perfect time to make sure your landscape is prepared for colder temperatures. From protecting irrigation systems to managing fallen leaves, a little attention now can help prevent problems during winter and give your property a healthier start next spring.

At B. H. Graning Landscapes, Inc., our teams work throughout the mountains of Western North Carolina, and we know how quickly conditions can change as fall gives way to winter. Here are several landscape priorities to consider before the first hard freeze arrives.

Winterize Your Irrigation System

One of the most important fall maintenance tasks is preparing your irrigation system for freezing temperatures.

Water left inside irrigation lines and components can freeze, expand, and potentially cause damage. Proper winterization helps protect your system and reduces the likelihood of discovering costly problems when you’re ready to turn the irrigation back on next spring.

If your property has an irrigation system, don’t wait until freezing weather is already in the forecast to start thinking about winterization.

Keep Up with Falling Leaves

Those beautiful mountain leaves eventually end up somewhere—and often that’s your lawn, landscape beds, driveways, and outdoor living spaces.

Heavy leaf accumulation can block sunlight and airflow from reaching turf while trapping moisture against the ground. Regular leaf removal keeps your property looking maintained while also helping protect the health of your lawn.

Staying ahead of leaves throughout the season is much easier than dealing with a thick, wet layer after most of the trees have dropped.

Give Your Turf a Strong Finish

Fall lawn care doesn’t end when the temperatures cool down.

October is a good time to monitor newly seeded areas, keep leaves from covering emerging turf, and make sure your lawn heads into dormancy in good condition. Properties that received fall aeration, overseeding, or other turf improvements may require continued attention as new grass becomes established.

Healthy turf going into winter creates a stronger foundation for spring.

Check Drainage and Erosion Problems

Fall rains can reveal drainage issues that may have been less noticeable during summer.

Look for standing water, washed-out areas, clogged drainage structures, exposed soil, or erosion along slopes and driveways. Addressing these concerns before winter can help protect your landscape through seasonal rain, snow, and freeze-thaw cycles.

  1. H. Graning’s GroundWorks team can assist with grading, drainage, erosion control, and other site improvements when a problem requires more than routine maintenance.

Prepare Plants and Landscape Beds

Fall is also an excellent time to take a closer look at your planting beds.

Removing debris, refreshing mulch or pine straw where appropriate, and evaluating plant health can help your landscape transition into winter looking clean and cared for.

October can also be an excellent planting season. Cooler air temperatures reduce stress on many plants while the soil remains warm enough to encourage root development.

Don’t Forget Outdoor Lighting

As daylight hours become noticeably shorter, landscape lighting becomes even more valuable.

Walk your property after dark and look for burned-out bulbs, fixtures that have shifted, overgrown plants blocking lights, or areas that could benefit from additional illumination. Proper outdoor lighting can highlight your home’s architecture and landscape while improving visibility along walkways, steps, driveways, and gathering spaces.
