Project Type: Full Landscape Design & Installation
Location: Western North Carolina
Divisions Involved: Design | BuildScape
Project Inspiration
When our clients moved into their newly constructed home—built by B. H. Graning Contracting—they wanted a landscape that would complement the craftsmanship and beauty of the house itself. Their goal was to create a timeless outdoor space that felt both natural and refined, blending native materials with functional design elements that enhanced everyday living.
Design Vision
From the start, the homeowners envisioned a cohesive landscape featuring native rock, regionally appropriate plants, a hardscape walkway, and thoughtfully designed landscape lighting. They wanted to highlight the natural beauty of their property while ensuring comfort, safety, and a sense of place that felt true to the mountains of Western North Carolina.
Collaboration and Design Process
The design journey began with Matthew Metcalf, one of B. H. Graning Landscapes’ experienced designers. The homeowners described the process as enjoyable and collaborative, praising Matthew’s patience and flexibility as they refined their ideas along the way. His ability to balance creativity with practicality helped transform their vision into a cohesive and sustainable plan.

Once the design was finalized, Ryan and Denise from the BuildScape Division worked closely with the clients to coordinate installation. Their scheduling flexibility ensured the project was completed at the right time for the homeowners, even as other elements of the new construction wrapped up.
Challenges and Solutions
As with most new home landscapes, minor adjustments arose during installation—from rethinking plant placements to fine-tuning lighting locations. Each challenge was met with open communication and hands-on teamwork. The BuildScape crew responded quickly and professionally, ensuring every detail was installed to perfection.
Project Outcome and Impact
The completed landscape perfectly complements the new home’s architecture, blending structure and softness through stonework, plantings, and subtle illumination. The landscape lighting has become a favorite feature, providing both safety and atmosphere by guiding guests along walkways and showcasing the home’s distinctive design at night.
The homeowners note that their outdoor space now feels complete—welcoming during the day and glowing beautifully after dark. Neighbors and visitors frequently comment on how naturally the landscape integrates with the home and surrounding environment.

Exceeding Expectations
The clients were especially impressed by the team’s continued attention to detail even after the project was finished. The BuildScape crew returned to refresh pine straw, replace a few plants, and stake young trees, ensuring that the finished product not only looked beautiful but would thrive long-term.
Client Reflections
“The team was patient, professional, and truly cared about getting everything right. Matthew guided us through the design with expertise, and Ryan and Denise made the installation process smooth and flexible. We couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.”
Looking Ahead
When asked for suggestions, the homeowners simply said, “Keep doing what you’re doing.” Their experience reflects the B. H. Graning Landscapes promise—to deliver beautiful, functional outdoor spaces through collaboration, craftsmanship, and care.
